The programme, named after one of the founding fathers of the European Union, visited secondary schools in rural areas. As a Member State of the European Union, it is particularly important for secondary school pupils in Hungary to acquire a deeper knowledge of European integration, its history and its institutional system.
Boglárka Koller, Vice-rector for International Affairs, Head of the Department of European Studies and Jean Monnet Chair Professor, organised a two-day roadshow for secondary schools in the framework of the Jean Monnet Chair project between 25 and 26 April 2023, during which she and her team visited four secondary schools in Eastern Hungary. The aim of the visit was to give an informative and interactive presentation to 11th grade students on the European Union, its role and importance today.
On 25 April, the team from the University of Public Service met for the first time with the students of the István Bocskai Catholic Secondary School and Technical School in Szerencs, and then continued their lectures at two renowned secondary schools in Miskolc, the Avasi Secondary School and the Gyula Fényi Jesuit Secondary School, College and Kindergarten. The next day, they closed the roadshow at the János Neumann Secondary School, Technikum and Dormitory in Eger. The programme was attended by more than 300 students and their teachers from the four secondary schools. The presentations were given by Dr Tibor Ördögh, who spoke to the students about how they interact with the European Union on a daily basis; Dr Attila Marján, who spoke about his years as an Eurocrat in Brussels and his professional experiences; and Dr András Varga, who drew the students' attention to European identity and values. In addition to the short presentations, the students also had time to fill out a quiz on the European Union, which was compiled and moderated by Dorottya Barják, Fanni Kiss and Petra Pálinkás, members of the Advanced College of International and European Studies. The three most skilful teams were rewarded with valuable presents, which were delivered to the secondary schools thanks to the Europe Point.
The university team received positive feedback from both students and teachers about the presentations and plans to organise another tour to secondary schools in the near future.
